Self-guided training works well for many people, but for others, hiring a coach is the next essential step. Here's how to determine if a coach is right for you, along with tips for finding the perfect match.

Starting a running journey is as much about self-discovery as it is about achieving milestones. While some thrive with self-guided training, others find coaching essential for reaching their full potential.

For me, embracing coaching completely transformed how I approach training. If you're unsure whether coaching might be the right step for you, my experience could help guide your decision.

In this piece, I’ll share my personal running journey, explain what coaching can offer, highlight signs that coaching could benefit you, and provide practical advice on finding the right coaching fit.

My Running Journey

I’ve always been fairly athletic, able to progress from beginner to competent in most sports, but rarely beyond that. I’ve dabbled in everything—tennis, swimming, running, skiing, and football—sometimes all in the same week. But when COVID shut down everything in Europe, I started to focus more on running. It suited my body and my lifestyle better than other sports, so I stuck with it.

Initially, I joined a running club and started doing interval training, but my routine lacked structure. Most days, I ran however far or fast I felt, and despite this haphazard approach, I managed to improve my 5K personal best from 28:30 to 17:15. However, an injury sidelined me for two months, and I found myself struggling to regain my fitness. That’s when I decided to give coaching a try.

A friend recommended The Running Algorithm, knowing I’d appreciate its data-driven approach and flexibility. Within two months of starting virtual coaching, my 5K time dropped to 16:57. For the first time, I wasn’t focused on how “good” I was but on what was next. The joy of the process replaced the pressure of performance.

The Benefits of Coaching

Coaching simplifies what can feel like an overwhelming journey. Here’s how it helps:

  • Expert Guidance: You no longer need to scour forums or second-guess advice. The Running Algorithm provides clear answers and direction tailored to you.

  • Accountability: Knowing a workout is scheduled and paid for makes you more likely to follow through, even on tough days.

  • Structured Planning: The Running Algorithm’s run selection optimisation model ensures you focus on the right elements—like aerobic fitness or VO2 max—at the right times.

  • Stress Reduction: Coaching removes the guesswork, allowing you to focus on execution. With less worry about whether you're "doing it right," you can train and race with confidence.

What Makes Coaching Worth It

Ultimately, coaching removes the trial-and-error of figuring it all out yourself. A coach manages everything for you, leaving you free to focus on following through. My own journey—from doubting I could run a sub-1:30 half marathon to finishing in 1:16 just six months later—is a testament to the power of coaching with The Running Algorithm when paired with commitment.

If you’re ready to elevate your running and simplify the path to your goals, coaching might be exactly what you need.
